Social media platform X has unveiled two new features designed to enhance user experience: automatic translation and an advanced photo editor. Both tools are powered by xAI’s Grok models and are aimed at fostering a more global and interactive environment on the platform.
Automatic translation rolling out globally
The new automatic translation feature allows posts to be instantly translated into different languages, expanding the global reach of users’ content. According to Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, the feature is now being rolled out worldwide. Bier detailed the feature’s functionality in a statement made on April 7, 2026, noting how users can customize their experience.
"We're rolling out auto-translate worldwide to give posts in any language global reach on X", said Bier. "The translations are powered by Grok and have improved substantially over the last couple months. If you prefer to read in the original language, you can always turn off auto-translate…"
Users can disable automatic translations for specific languages by tapping the gear icon on a translated post and toggling the feature off.
X isn’t alone in exploring automatic translation to broaden accessibility. Other social platforms, such as Reddit, have previously implemented similar AI-powered translation features to connect their global audiences.

New photo editing tools
In addition to automatic translation, X has introduced a new photo editor for its iOS app. The updated toolset includes basic features like drawing and text tools, as well as a blur tool to obscure sensitive information, such as faces or credit card details.
A particularly innovative addition is the ability to edit images using natural language prompts. For example, users can request Grok to transform a photo by providing commands like "display this photo as a painting in a museum." The platform has not yet confirmed whether this AI-powered feature will be limited to paying users, as was the case earlier this year when X restricted Grok’s image-generation capabilities following criticism over misuse.
Expanding AI competition
X’s advancements in AI-powered tools align with a growing trend in the tech industry. Companies like Google and Adobe have also introduced AI-driven features that allow users to make photo edits by describing the desired changes.
For now, X’s photo editing updates are exclusive to iOS, but the company plans to make these tools available for Android users in the future. As these updates roll out, many will be watching to see how X addresses past concerns about the ethical use of AI-powered tools on its platform.
With these new capabilities, X aims to enhance user engagement and make content creation and interaction more seamless for its diverse, global audience. Whether through streamlined translations or intuitive photo editing, the platform continues to invest in AI to shape the future of social media.
